Ready for Some Gore?

Right now... super in pain and kinda angry. So, on friday (two days ago) i had some oral surgery done... my gums were swelling so they had to "trim" them... over 12 shots of anestesia and an hour of sitting there with my mouth open... now i have to go back on wensday! For the second part... yaaaay

Greek Myths: The Story of Narcissus

The term narcissism comes from the greek legend of Narcissus. Narcissism is a mental state where basically you are in love with your self.  Now, the story of Narcissus is one of my favorite greek myths as told by my Grandfather and it made me realize how men can truly be THAT self centered.


Narcissus was a stunning young man, and he knew it. He rejected all  possible lovers because "none were right for him".  One beautiful summer morning, Narcissus mounted his finest horse and rode up a mountain that led to a spring where legend had that the most beautiful water nymphs lived.  These nymphs would only leave their watery sanctuary to the most beautiful person in the world.  Too bad Narcissus didn't hear the rest of the legend.  You had to be the most internally beautiful, but Narcissus was convinced, so up the mountain he rode.


Up at this spring the nymphs would frolick and play together to their heart content in the summer's heat, for man or woman rarely traveled the dangerous path to the spring, but this particular morning, they heard the footsteps approaching and all swam away giggling still.  Except for one curious young nymph, who still did not understand for she had not seen a human face before.  When Narcissus stopped and dismounted his horse, he quickly rushed to the stream in search of the nymphs.  Seeing none in immediate sight, he proceded down towards the water intending for a drink.  Instead he was stopped by his own reflection.  Underneath his reflection, though he could not see her, the young nymph sat and watched him.  Narcissus then continued to say the words, "I Love You" to his reflection, over and over again.  Now nymphs cannot speak but they can make sounds and repeat what they hear or mimick.  So this young nymph continued to repeat, "I Love You" back to Narcissus without him the wiser.  Narcissus died there by that spring and the nymph sadly continued in her everlasting life.  Although, still by that very spring where Narcissus died, a beautiful flowers bloom.  Although it wasn't said in so many words, the nymphs called it, Narcissus.

SITKA FINE ARTS CAMP

Tomorrow starts the new year of SITKA FINE ARTS CAMP!! I am sooo excited it's going to be so much fun because i'm the kid that's from farthest away... whoop whoop!!

SUPER SAD!

Before I left to San Juan to get on the plane to take me home, I said goodbye to my neighbors who are moving to Connecticut... AND MY HUSBAND WASN'T THERE!!! I'm going to miss my hubby :( lol jk but still i really wish i could have said goodbye to alex, he's been a really good friend his year! I'M GOING TO MISS YOU PALACIOS'!!

Almost Home

Well tomorrow at two o clock, I get on a plane to Sitka... I'm so excited to see all my friends! I freaking miss you guys!  Anyways, I just got back from the base movies, went to see Beastly and it was awesome!! Alex Pettyfer is hot. Enough said. If you haven't seen it, do it now it is an amazing movie! Well, maybe it's just cuz pettyfer is in it but still! Well signing off for the night.

Movie Review: Black Swan

Black Swan, directed by Darren Arofonsky, is a story of a ballet dancer, Nina, who wants only to be perfect.  That is, until the director of the new version of Swan Lake comes in, he informs her that she doesn't need to be perfect, she just needs to lose herself.  As she struggles to lose herself in the roll of the Black Swan, she begins to hallucinate.  Believing that another dancer Lilly is trying to steal her part she is losing her mind, she begins to "morph" into her character.  As her over-protective mother tries to gain control over her changing daughter, she becomes more and more like the Black Swan and less like her normal White Swan.  Drugs, sex, secrets, alcohol and men.  All this is happening with her Black Swan metamorphis.  Will Nina be who she wants to be or will she be what the roll is calling for?

This film, I just could not seem to find the theme!  The entire movie my jaw was dropped.  Of course this film was rated R, (thank you Danielle's aunt for sponsoring me!), but still.  This girls was going so insane that none of us could figure out when she was hallucinating and when she was not!  The affects in this movie however where excellent!  I also enjoyed the ballet... even though that was a minor part.  This film, blew me away.  Despite what most say about it getting good review but not meeting them, they were wrong, very enjoyable film.

I do not reccomend this movie to the weak of heart.  With multiple suggestive themes and scenes this should not be viewed by anyone who isn't used to R rated films.  A thriller in my mind, a horror in others, a twisted romance in everyone's mind.  I kudos to Darren Arofonsky, this film made me double take every scene and say, "Waaait a minute..." although it scared both me and the person that went with me, we both enjoyed it.  Recommended to all who can appreciate an "interesting" movie.

Championships news!!

the medals read Puerto Rico High School Athletic Alliance *CHAMPIONSHIP*

Last friday was the Puerto Rico High School Athletic Alliance Track and Field Championships *gasp* and it.was.awesome!! We got there at 4:00 and well i sat on my butt for about three hours until my event started.  Then, when I started throwing my discus I was soooooo angry!!! My first two throws suuucked! Then, my final throw where it was make it or break it, I though of all the drama that had happened in the past two weeks and POW I threw that sucka.  I threw it over 22 meters! Not only did I win third place but I also broke the school record from 2008! I was so happy! After I received my medal I ran as fast as I could over to Javelin.  It took me only one throw to place! On pure adrenaline alone I threw once again over 22 meters! I also placed third and again broke the school record from 1995! a sixteen year old record!  I was so happy!  Overall I received 6 points for our school which won 2nd place in the overall season and 2nd place for the championships! GO RAMEY!!

Track and Field update

Well last Friday was the second Track and Field competition of the season and I placed fourth in discus! With a throw of 19.85!! I'm sooooo happy!!!!

First Track and Field Meet

Well, let's just say this, in Puerto Rico if an event is supposed to start at 4:05 its starting at 4:55!!!  Well, not only was everything confusing everyone else i competed against was scary!  I compete in shotput, disco (discus), and javelina (javelin).  In shotput, I did ok but i don't think i placed.  Then apparently me and the other girl doing disco were apparently late and they let us have one throw which was terrible on my part... 15.23.  Then finally javelina time.  Me and the other girl doing it got there on time thank God.  We both got to throw a javelina three times but my throws didn't go so well.  My first one was the farthest I've ever thrown but, since i stepped on the runway line, it didn't count... but! My other two throws were fine but apparently they were fouled!  I was so angry!!  Well, next competition i this friday so i'm excited...

Betrayal

She sat atop the icy cliff, staring down at the churning waters below.  The wind stung her tear streaked face and the cold numbed her bare feet.  It wasn't supposed to be like this, love.  It was supposed to be that feeling that someone would be there when you went to school on Monday.  But not for her.  For her, love was a cold and ragged knife thrusted deep into her heart.  It was all his fault, he was supposed to love her, unconditionally.  But no, she was a pawn, to get the other girl, the prettier girl, the girl that wasn't her.  He wasn't going to use her anymore.  It would all end tonight.


She sat there, in tears.  He knew that she was there, the message had been left and he was on his way.  She needed to know why, why had she not been good enough for him.  Everything had been real for her, every kiss, every static touch.  Yet, everything had been blown over his head, not a single kiss had even reached the cold and empty abyss he attempted to call a heart.  Each tear that ran down her face right now, that was real.  


Tires on gravel.  Now was the time.  She quietly rose to her numbed feet and continued to look at the dark, almost inviting churning waters.  The slow approach of footsteps gradually grew in to a quick jog, he was calling her name.  He wanted her to step away from the ledge.  He honestly just didn't understand what he had done.  She was shouting at him now, explaining everything to him like a small child.  She looked over her shoulder hoping to see an apologetic expression, instead she saw a blank look as he tried to remember what she was saying to him as if it had never happened and she was making it up.  She turned her gaze back to the waters again, the whitecaps appearing to her as soft inviting blankets instead of a mask to the jagged rocks of the cliff below.  No remorse he should feel.


Before he had any chance to attempt to win her, she said a final thing, "If I won't be loved in your heart, I will remain there as guilt."  And with that she stepped off the icy cliff into the dark waters below.  Tears running down her face, but a sinister smile canceling it out.  As her body hit the rocks, blood flowing out imitating legs of jellyfish, only the wind and the rain wept.

Writer's Group Project

   She fell on her knees, gasping and trembling.  She glance at her hands, shaking and dripping with blood and dirt.  "Why?" was the only and last word on her lips as she tried to keep life within herself.  No one would have figured her in any danger, especially danger from her well loved spouse.  Their home was straight out of pottery barn and he, was straight out of a male model gig.  No one would've suspected him to be a phsycopathic, jealous murder.  
   
His birthday was coming up and she was ready to throw him the bash of his life.  She would go out while he was at work and plan with his buddies, where the bash would be, food, etc. Things took a turn for the worst after the call...


   It was his friend calling for further planning.  He picked up and his friend asked if she was home.  Of course, he thought his friend was pulling his leg and replied, "Yeah she's here man.  What you want?"  With all seriousness, the friend replied, "To talk to her!"  He raised his eyebrows and handing his wife the phone.  He knew what was going on now.
                                                                  An Affair.


   If he wasn't good enough for his own wife then no one should be, he knew what he had to do.  He could hear her laughter in the other room.  This made his skin crawl, his brain wanted to burst with anger!  How could she do this? How!?  This was not how love was.  It ends tonight.


   He walked into the backyard and waited until she finished talking.  She finished talking, hung up the phone and walked out into the backyard looking for him.  Before she could say a word to him, he plunged a kitchen knife into her chest.  He then released her and she fell onto her knees into the grass.  He hands held where the knife had penetrated her skin, she began to sob.  She was trembling and had blood and dirt covering in hands.  As her life slowly vanished from her eyes, she asked one final question to her husband she loved, "Why?" she then ceased trembling and breathed out for the final time.  


   He fetched her cell phone from the pocket of her jeans so that he could know why she had done what she had.  A text to the friend read, "Did you buy the decorations? His surprise party has to be amazing!" Oops, everybody makes mistakes.  He then, covered in her blood, kissed his wife for the final time and ran out the door.

Yesterday, we played our season enemy Commonwealth in the semi final game...and we lost... We were tied until the second half when they had a free kick for a stupid foul that no one saw (I'm pretty sure it didn't even happen) then it went in the goal but here's the kicker, i jumped for the ball and landed right on my butt...  I jolted my back pretty bad and they took me out!  I had to go with the EMT's and our coach had to put another girl in, the girl they put in had never played goalie and she was really scared, when I came back the whistle blew, and we lost but, we tried out hardest and we know that we were truly better than them.  They needed fouls and penalty shots to beat us and that is what happens every time we play them.  I'm really proud of my team and we had a great season!  GO RAMEY!!!

yesterday was out first playoff game! We played against Cupeyville school, (yes the same as from the tournament). WE WON!!! SEMI FINALS HERE WE COME!

Happy Valentines Day! Although I unfourtunatley don't have a valentine I will be spending this romantic Hallmark holiday with my buds!

Long story short! I'M ON THE ALL STAR JV SOCCER TEAM!!! I'm soooooooo honored!

That's what I am! Ok if you don't get the title, i'll let you guess.... heck with that ok so when i left Alaska I weighed, (wait for it), 150 lbs!!! I know it's gross but hey i've been working on it and now i weigh... 132!!!! If my math is right then i have lost 18 lbs! GO ME IMA LOSER!!!

Flabbergasted

Ok, it's Sunday.  Yesterday, our schools J.V. and Varsity soccer teams went to San Juan for an invitational soccer tournament.  We weren't expected much because every team we were going to play was division A teams.  So, we left at six o'clock in the morning.  Our first game was at nine o'clock against Cupeyville School, we played them good but ended up winning 1-0.  So we were moving on to the second round!  Our second game was at one o'clock so we waited around watching the other games.  Our varsity team sadly lost 2-3 but we had one final shot on goal in the last minute that ricocheted off the goal post.  It was sad but they were glad we were moving on.  Our second game was against Colegio Marista and they were good.  They were bigger than us, stronger then some of us and faster than a few of us.  In the end, we were tied 1-1 so we went to penalty shootouts.  Basically each team takes turns shooting on the other teams goalies until one blocks it.  I, was, freaking, out!  None of us blocked a ball for about ten minutes. Then, I did.  The whole entire team, soccer and basketball ran out on the field! Everyone was hugging me! It was an amazing feeling, we were going to the tournament.  But it wasn't over yet.  Our final game was against American Military Academy, the host school.  This game was especially hard because i was injured.  Since i am goal keeper i was running for the ball and i jumped on it but, my face came in contact with the ground and i skidded across.  I recieved a large cut to the bridge of my nose and cut up my mouth with my braces but, i still caught the ball.  In the end we were tied 0-0 and we did penalties again!  This time, i stopped the ball the second time they kicked. We had won the tournament!  We were so excited!!!  My team even tried to dump a cooler on me!  They partially succeded.  After our team was given our trophy and metals, I heard someone say, "Goalkeeper, Olivia Rivera!" and then everyone on my team cheering.  I didn't understand what was happening.  Since i had recieved injury to my face but i kept playing the refs, coaches and many others voted me MVP.  That's one of the most amazing things that has ever happen to me soccer wise!  I am really proud of my team and myself! We did a great job! Go Ramey!

Ok so I know you have probably heard of the show already, but lately I have been crazily obsessed with the show Supernatural! It.is.awesome! WAAAHOOO!!!

Book Review: If I Stay

   If I Stay, by Gayle Forman, is a story that will make you laugh, cry and maybe even throw the book across the room.  When Mia's family goes for a drive one morning, it just seems like another car ride.  Mia sitting in the back with her eight year old brother, her previous rocker parents sitting in the front and all of them trying to decide what music to put on the radio.  A happy family picture.  It all changes in an instant, a big truck loses control, and suddenly Mia is looking at her family.  Her father's brains scattered on the black ice of the road, her mother's eyes blood filled, and even Mia herself.  Beaten and bruised.  Mia doesn't understand though, she sees her body but she can see it through her own eyes.  When medics arrived she's arlifted to a hospital, on the way there she hears the medics talking about the whole accident.  How her parents where DOA, dead on accident, and how she was in real bad shape.  After multiple surgeries, being placed in the ICU and mulitple talks from sobbing relatives, Mia is faced with a decision.  Over the course of almost 48 hours, Mia needs to decide, does she stay with her distant family and boyfriend Adam, even though she'll be an orphan  or does she leave and find out what the future has to hold?

  I thought the themes in this novel was remembering.  Throughout the 48 hours, there are flashback of different times before the accident.  Her first cello recital, her and Adams first date, how she and her best friend became so, and more.  Some of these memories want to make her stay, others cause the opposite.  Yet Mia is still faced with the worst decision any person could face.

   I would reccomend this book to anyone who is willing to cry reading a book.  I had moments when I was letting the waterworks flow, I admit it!  Who also have to be willing to read some R rated material, language wise.  You also need to open you heart to this story, put yourself in this girls shoes and decide, would you stay?  If I Stay will tug at your heartstrings and give you so much to think about, it's well written and will have you gripping on to every word.  Check out this novel any chance you get.

Book Review: Pretties

    Pretties, by Scott Westerfeld, is the second book in the Uglies trilogy.  This time, Tally has given her self up to the pretty committee so she can test a new drug made by the Smokies.  This drug is designed to cure "pretty headness" or the tiny lesions on every pretties brain that makes them stupid and "bubbly".  Tally remembers this at the back of her head but chooses to ignore it because she also remembers that anyone that has this information, tends to mysteriously "die".  So when a Smokie shows up with the cure, she's scared that the cure can kill her but she knows she has to.  Months after taking the pills and splitting them with her boyfriend Zane, Tally is back to ugly mindness but Zane, is getting worse.  He suffers from terrible head splitting headaches and The Specials are on to them. Tally is afraid.  So she packs up Zane and some other pretties and heads out to find the Smokies, and some answers.  But when a misguided fall leads to Tally being stranded in the barbaric wilderness without a hoverboard, she will need to rely on some barbarians themselves to survive and find her Zane.
  
    I believe that the themes in this book are love and never letting go.  Tally loves her new pretty boyfriend Zane, but she still remembers David from the Smoke, and how she hurt him, and this kills her.  So she is stuck in the typical love triangle.  Tally also needs to remember how she survived in Smoke to survive alone without her friends and without her basic city necessities.  After her best friend Peris backed out of saving Zane from whatever the pill was doing to him, Tally was upset with his decision but she needed to hold on to their friendship still.

   I would reccomend this book only to those who read the first in the trilogy, Uglies, and those who are willing to cope with the very "bubbly" dialect.  This is a book for those who like to read about the possiblities of the future.  This novel is also very discriptive and it has you clinging onto every word.  So definatly check out Scott Westerfeld's novel Pretties.

SCHOOL IS OUT!!! We are free!  Since I live in Puerto Rico, and they have basically two Christmas' (Christmas and Three Kings Day), I don't have to go back until the tenth of January!! I'm free!!!!!!!

Book Review: Uglies

Uglies, by Scott Westerfield, is about a girl named Tally who is just dying until her sixteenth birthday.  In this time, (Unknown), when you turn sixteen you don't get you licsence, you turn pretty.  Tally is what her time considers "ugly" otherwise meaning she doesn't have the unblemished sking, the perfect hair, or the amazing body that all the pretties in the New Pretty town have.  So Tally is over the moon excited when the week of her birthday arrives.  The she meets Shay.  Shay has the exact same birthday as Tally so now Tally is even more excited to share her pretty experience with someone else.  Except Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty.  Shay is countinously talking about a place called Smoke where uglies can go and not be pressured to be pretty, no pretties and no pressure.  Tally knows that somewhere deep in her heart she want to go with Shay, but she still want to be pretty so she can be with her former ugly, now pretty, friend Peris.  So, Tally lets Shay leave and she stays for her pretty making operation.  When the day arrives though, she's taken from the hospital to a place called Special Circumstances, which no one believes exists by the way, and they tell her, "Find you friend and this place called Smoke or you'll never turn pretty."
So, now Tally is in search of this infamous Smoke and Shay.  But will the time comes will she really turn against her best friend and betray everyone she's learned to love in Smoke?

     I believe the theme of this book was friendship.  Shay taught Tally how not to hate yourself even if your ugly, and now that Tally is faced with a decision to betray Shay, frienship will make the right choice shine through to her and make her choose between the life she wants and the life she needs.  Another theme I believe is sacrifice.  In the end, Tally makes a huge sacrifice to save not just Smoke, but all the pretties and future pretties.  This novel shows ultimatley the "perfect" being doesn't have to be pretty.

   I think this book is for anyone who has self esteem issues.  Not that you have to have them to read it but it just makes you feel so self impowered!  When you read this book, you may start believing that life would be better with the same type of operation, but in the end you'll say, "Pssh I don't need an operation!"  and it'll feel so good!  Not only does this book make you feel amazing, it's a great time passer and you just get sucked in!  So take some time and choose Uglies as your next book to read.

The Essay I Wrote for Reading Harriet Tubman and Too Soon a Woman

Harriet Tubman: The Conductor of the Underground Railroad and Too Soon a Woman are two completely different stories, but they are both connected together by theme.  The theme in both of these stories is strength in women. Whether it be transporting slaves illegally or risking their lives for others, both of these stories have the same idea.

In Harriet Tubman, the strength is coming from a slave who has lived her life working for nothing. This slave is Harriet Tubman.  She decided that being a slave is just plain unacceptable so she does something that no one has had the courage to do, run away.  Harriet isn’t running away alone; on the way she picks up eleven others and tells them the wonders of freedom.  Harriet knows that there will be trouble on her way; cold weather and difficult terrain were just a few of the challenges she faced!  Yet, she doesn’t give up. She shows strength, continuing even though she is afraid.  She leads the slaves for over a month, stopping at safe houses along the way.  People were kind enough to feed and house over ten people at once, even though if they were caught they would be thrown in jail and the slaves were either hung or returned to their masters.  Even with those dangers over their heads, they continued on.  In the end, they made it too their destination of Canada, and they were free.  The story shows that even in the worst situation, a woman can have strength.

Too Soon a Woman was a little different story. There were no slaves or running away involved, but there was trust and sacrifice.  The story is told from the point of view of a young eleven-year-old boy as he is traveling in an old wagon with his family being dragged by an old horse to somewhere better then was they were.  On their way they meet Mary, and eighteen year old girl who had run away from difficult circumstances.  She faces the father with no fear and asks to travel with them. In exchange she will watch the two young girls.  Unwillingly, the father agrees. After some hard travel they reach a cabin.  It is moldy and disgusting but it is shelter. As soon as a fire is built the father tells them all he must travel on to town for food and leave them with Mary.  After three days they lose their horse so both the young boy and Mary look for it.  After two days of searching they have no horse and they ran out of food, so Mary sets out on her own in search of the missing horse.  The boy started yelling for Mary every time he fetched firewood but there was never a response.  It was dark when there was finally a response; Mary came back with no horse but a huge mushroom.  The young girls danced happily but Mary only snapped to be quiet for they couldn’t eat it yet, the mushroom could kill them if it was of the poisonous kind.  So instead, Mary cuts a slice and cooks a piece and eats some herself.  It may sound selfish but she was doing it for the safety of the kids.  Both Mary and the boy sit up late waiting for something to happen but nothing does, so that morning they all have mushroom, and that night the father came home. In the end Mary becomes their new stepmom, and they love her.  Mary sacrificed her life for those kids!  She could have died from the mushroom and if she was careless so could have the kids. They survived almost a week without their father because of her.

These stories have an amazing amount in common.  Harriet risked her life for slaves and Mary put her life on the line for children. Both women put the lives of others in front of theirs and they were repaid well.  Harriet knew that if she turned back, gave up or wasn’t careful, she and the other could’ve died or been hung, but she continued despite her fear. Mary knew that she wasn’t welcome in the family but she didn’t care. She decided that the kids mattered more and willingly risked her life for them. Both of these amazing stories show courage in women in life or death situations.  In the end, both stories had a happy ending, making it to freedom or living with the ones you’ve come to love. It took courage from a woman to get there.

Book: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, by Stephenie Meyer author of the Twilight Saga, is about one of the newborn vampires created for Victoria's army in the third Twilight book Eclipse. Bree was turned from a gangly 15 year old girl into a blood thirsty, red eyed, newborn vampire just for the sake of destroying "her",(As Victoria is known in the Novella), enemies. Yet, none of the 20 plus newborn vampires that surround Bree know that, not even her. That is, until Diego showed up. Diego is the favored one by their babysitter Reilly, who was enforced by "her", and is starting to doubt everything that is told to them. Diego believes that Reilly is lying through his teeth telling them things such as the sun destroys them and turns them into dust and that the enemies that they have been made to destroy are planning to take over Seattle and kill them all. So, Diego convinces Bree to follow him one day so they can finally know they truth. Will it get them in deeper trouble then they could ever image?

I believe the theme in this book is trust your gut. Even though Bree has a hard time believing Diego at first, she goes with it and follows him both hunting and in following Reilly. The theme really makes itself obvious.

I would reccomend this book to people who have only read Eclipse first, otherwise they won't understand anything at the end. Also this book may be shorter than the normal novels Stephenie Meyer writes but you need to pay attention otherwise you're going to miss A LOT!!! I loved this book and anyone who has a large reading base will too! Enjoy!!

Moving in!!!

I am almost official moved in! I really miss all my friends in Sitka and everything is soo different! Here in Puerto Rico school starts in TWO WEEKS ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

My family has the netflix thing where you can like, go on line and instantly watch movie and tv shows, and I was looking through the tv show and saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the options so, I tried it out. Long story short, I'v been watching for about 5 day and i'm on season three episode 12!

Book Review: The Pearl

The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, Is about how riches destroy young fisherman Kino's life. Kino lives a very normal life for a fisherman. He lives with his wife Juana and his baby boy Coyotito in the village where every poor man, woman, and child lives. Kino has never been bothered by his lack of riches, until the day of the scorpion. When Coyotito gets attacked by a scorpion they need the city doctor, who refuses to help anyone who cannot pay for his services, which is a fair share of people. So Kino decides that he is going to go do something other than fishing that day, he's going to go pearl diving. He keeps telling himself that he is going to find the biggest pearl imaginable so he can save his only child. There he is down at the sea floor with a basket attached to a rope connected to his priced family heirloom, the boat, where Juana and Coyotitio, feeling worse as the day goes, wait. As he makes his way among the beds of oysters he rips up clumps and throws them in the basket then, he sees it. The biggest oyster anyone has ever seen. Once ashore, Kino opens up the oyster to discover it's not only the biggest oyster, but it has the biggest pearl inside it too. Kino now has something to take into town to trade for actually money, probably more money then he has ever seen in his life. Yet, music of evil is mixing with the music of the pearl. What will Kino, Juana, and Coyotito do when the pearl jeopardizes their lives?

The main theme of this book is family doesn't replace family. When Coyotito got stung by a scorpion, Kino and Juana didn't automatically go to the doctor, Juana tried to suck the poison out herself, they didn't need a doctor. Before Kino found the pearl, his small family was fine without money, they lived on basic needs what they had at the time and nothing more. When the pearl came along, jealous and rage replaced it all.e

I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to go back a couple pages and re-read something because this book was very complex and I had to go back a couple of times to re-read some things. Other then re-reading, this book was a very short but meaningful short story, I certainly enjoyed it, I hope you will too.

Movie Review: Nine Dead

Just imagine, you and eight other strangers in a gray room with no windows, poles that you're handcuffed too, and one door. Then a man comes in and says to you,"Figure out why all of you are here and if you can't, I'll kill one of you every ten minutes." Nine complete strangers with no apparent connections have to figure out why they are there and how they are connected or they will all die. That's what Chris Shadley's Nine Dead is all about, nine strangers figuring out how they know each other.

I actually first believed that this movie would be corny but I was proven wrong. This movie not only was thrilling but a real mind bender. Throughout the entire movie these nine people are connecting things piece-by-piece and it's just...interesting trying to follow along. So definitely check this movie out! I enjoyed it, hope you will too.

Roland Smith

Yes you read it right, the author Roland Smith came and visited my middle school!!! It was sooooooo amazing! Of course naturally I asked about a million questions... Well it was only four but he sarcastically got annoyed, at least I hope it was sarcastic.... Anyways if you don't know who Roland Smith he is a very popular author. He's the author of books like Sea Otter Rescue, The Last Lobo, Tentacles, and Cryptid Hunters just to name a view. Roland Smith was really quite an amazing guy, he wasn't all, "I'm rich and have a million copies sold!" He was very fun to listen to and very down to earth, he gave me a lot of inspiration to write more. I believe the most important thing he told me was that he wrote about what was important to him, not what was important to other people... I just thought that made so much sense *sniff sniff* quite touching really! Video Game Review: God of War

God of War was a very unique game. I know all of the games lately are mostly Call of Duty, but this game was much different. The whole entire game revolves around greek mythology, and personally, I LOVE greek mythology so this game was enjoyable. So basically, you are the abnoramally strong and buff Kratos, and your mission is to kill the God of War Aries. Now, Kratos isn't really the bad guy, he dosn't just wake up one day and decide he wants to kill Aries, he has his reasons. At that time in Kratos' life, he is under the control of Aries. During battle, Kratos begged the God of War for help in exchange for his soul, I guess Aries liked that offer. So it seems that Kratos is just a little bit sick of being told what to do, I mean because of Aries, Kratos acidentally killed his wife and child, and that will forever hautn him. So now Kratos is on his misson, through trechorous deserts and mysterious underwater taverns, Kratos makes his way to Pandora's box, so he can defeat Aries once and for all.

Just a few warnings about this game, it is rated M for a good reason, it is very gorey and extremely bloody and there is some... other things too, so think before playing. Other than that, the graphics were decent, (compared to the second and third one.) So if you play this game I hope you enjoy it. *

Movie Review: How to Train Your Dragon

How to Train your Dragon, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, is about a young viking by the name of Hiccup, yes that was not a typo his name is Hiccup. You know how all viking have to have a "tough" name to ward off all those trolls and such, well let's just say Hiccup dosn't do that much warding off as he
should. So the movie begins with Hiccup telling you about his village, about how it's south of misery or something like that. Occording to Hiccup, the worst things, are the pests. While some villages have rats or roaches, their pests are a little more... Unique. I think you know what I'm talking about, dragons. All these dragons do is steal the villages sheep, which are their food source for the winter, and these vikings, LOVE TO EAT!!! Now, where does Hiccup get involved in this you may ask. Now there are many differnt species of dragon to avoid, including the one that has a nasty habit of setting itself on fire, ouch. Yet the one dragon that everyone fears the most, has never been seen, a Nigh Fury. No one has every seen a Night Fury but one thing is for certain, it never misses. So here is where Hiccup comes in, now like every other teenage boy, Hiccups going to do something stupid to impress a chick. So Hiccup takes a abnormally large catapault and sets up a shot to take down the legendary Night Fury. He has one shot... BAM!!! It's a hit! The Night Fury went down. The only question is, now what?

I thought the theme in this movie was don't judge a book by it's cover. Even though all these dragons may be stealing fish and livestock from villages everywhere, they're starving themselves, so they arn't really selfish theives. Another factor about not judging a book by it's cover is that Hiccup's dad is the toughest viking around, so everyone is expecting that Hiccup is going to exactly like his father, when really he's just skin and bone. So you really can judge something by it's appearance.

I would absoulty reccomend this to everyone! This movie was absoultley adorable! Dreamworks has never dissapointed me before. I would like to warn you though that I did get a little teary eyed, I'm not going to say why but I did. So if you love mythical creatures, cartoons, or just plain fun, definatly go see his film I 99.99% promise you'll love it. I know I did. *

Spring Break or Long Weekend?

This isn't the best spring break i've had... I mean all i've done is sleep and watch LOST really. Maybe I should read my lit. novel more... it's one of Mr. Allison's favorites, The Pearl and The Red Pony. Two books in one! Jeez I need something to do.

Movie Review: Cry-Baby

Cry-Baby, directed by John Waters, is a modern day Romeo and Juliet. Allison is a young girl growing up, as the movie refers to them, a square. You could also call her a goody two shoes. The thing with Allison is that she is just tired of being so good! So, she decides to go after a drape, AKA a juvinile delinquit. Who is it you may ask? None other than the rottenist delinquit of them all, Cry-Baby Walker. Of course, Allison's Grandmother dissaproves strongly, as does Allison's square boyfriend Baldwin. The only way Cry-Baby is going to win over Allison is with his most dangerous weapon of all, his voice. After convincing her Grandmother, Allison is taken on the ride of her life! Allison hoppes on Cry-Baby's motorcycle and they ride on over to the Turkey Point Swimming Club owned and ran by Cry-Baby's grandparents. This dosn't go over well with Allison's boyfriend though. Baldwin gathers up his own little "gang" called the whiffles, and they all head over to Turkey Point. After vandilizing every car in the parking lot, Baldwin eyes Cry-Baby's prized posession, his motorcycle. Next thing you know, there's a flaming motorcycle rolling down the hill. How will this effect the war between the gangs and the squares?

I think the theme of this movie is simply love who loves you the most. Baldwin might have wanted what was best for Allison, but Cry-Baby could relate to Allison more and loved her more than his own gang. Another theme is that friendship lies is strange places. Upon arriving at Turkey Point, Allison meets the girls of the gang, Wanda, Pepper and Hatchetface. Soon after, they are closer than hubcaps on a tire.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone who either likes old timey movies and romance. But, I wouldn't reccomend this movie to anyone under 10 due to language, "themes", and violence. Other than that, this movie was great, very very very romantic! I absolutley enjoyed this movie and I hope you do too!

Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, is about a girl named Alice who had always dreamed of a mystical land that she always called wonderland. Of course, everyone always told her it was just a dream, there's no such thing a wonderland. Not to Alice. While at a social gathering, Alice begins to chase a rabbit through the gardens, not just any rabbit though, a rabbit in a tailcoat. No wonder Alice is following this rabbit! After she loses the rabbit down an abnormally large rabbit hole, she decides to take a peek down the rabbit hole. Yet, Alice being as clumsy as she is, falls in. Now typically, if a girl of 19 fell down a rabbit hole, she wouldn't go very far down, but Alice keeps falling and falling past abstracts things such as a piano! To Alice, this just seems all too familiar. After Alice finally land on the ceiling of a room, and drinks her drink me drink and shrinks, then eats her eat me cake then grows back, and drinks her drink once again, she finally fits through the abnoramlly small door, and into the real wonderland, she begins to travel.

I definatley think that the theme in this movie is following your heart. Alice may have been told for 13 years that there is no such thing as wonderland or tweedledees and tweedledums. Yet, she know in her heart that this is where she was meant to be her entire life. I also think another theme is finding your inner confidence. Alice has unknowingly been destined to defeat the red queens gabberwalky and is scared out of her mind. Yet, finding her inner confidence might just save wonderland.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone who has either read the book or seen the original movie because this is definatly a great interpritation. I would also reccomend this movie to any Tim Burton fans, Tim Burton is a personal favorite of mine because his work isn't what some people call... "normal", then again, how can you really define normal now a days. Anyways I wouldn't reccomend this movie to small children due to some let's just say pure wack jobiness and violence... It's all fun and games until the big spotted beast looses an eye, literally. Well I definalty enjoyed this movie and I hope you do too!

AMSEA

This is the Immersion Suites we had to wear. Aren't they fashionable? (By the way, I do not know who this is!!)

Ok so here in Alaska, we have to take a water safety course in 5th, 7th, 9th, and I think 11th grade. Since I'm in seventh grade, my whole seventh grade class walked down to the town hall and did a bunch of different courses. First, my group went to the signals course where we learned about different flares, noise makers, and reflectors. We also got to check out a cool space blanket that after holding it around you for a while you get really hot and sweaty. Pretty cool right? After that session we headed over to the obstacle courses... oh yeah you heard me right. I was on an all girls team with my friends Carley and Saige A.K.A, the muskateerettes!! So the first challenge we where faced with was we had to each get on a full immersion suit, link arms then walk down to the life raft, then we got in one at a time, after that we get out of the raft one at a time, get back to the line and take off the suits. We didn't make finals but we did awesome!!! The second obstacle course though, we DOMINATED!! What had to be done was each of us went up to a table, make a fake mayday call, grabbed three survival items, get on a skateboard, roll around different bay signs, make a shelter out of boogie board, make a S.O.S out of string, pull in an anchor, run back to base, and jump rope ten times. Since my mother's in the Coast Guard I did an excellent job. Thanks to that, my group leader, who was the P.E teacher challenged me. I did great and kept up with him until we got to the shelter part... I still did awesome though!!! After obstacles, we went onto an actually commercial fishing vessel! The Karian. She was a beautiful boat but I didn't enjoy the station much... Anyways after that we headed over to the small boats safety course where I got to pretend to be a kayaker! Fun fun fun!!! After lunch, we only had two more stations. The first was the Alaska Search and Rescue, which I thought was going to be boring but turned out to be pretty fun! The girls challenged to boys to find ten pennies in the front of the hall. The idea was the pennies where clues to where the missing person was. Of course the girls found 100% and the boys only found 60% which was no surprise. Then there was the final station, the DAMAGE CONTROL UNIT!!! Ok I know I have to admit the first part was a little dull but then we got to go outside where they had pipes with holes in them attached to a hose, and we had to try to patch the holes!!! I had the same team as the obstacle course plus Elaina, me and elaine where the deckhands who patched,(sorta), the holes, Carley was the ship captain who made the "call" to the Coast Guard, and Saige was the cook who had to run info back and forth between us and Carley. After that we just walked back to school! It was a tiring day but I'm glad everyone got the information we needed to stay safe on the water! So a big shout out to AMSEA, Alaska Air Station Coast Guard, and Alaska Search and Rescue!!! If I missed anyone I'm sorry and thank you!!!!

I Got a Good Question for You!!

Fair warning, anyone who goes to my school has already answered this question...

 So, in my language arts class we are reading a book called Zach's Lie, and after we read a section of the book we do a BM R&W or a benchmark read and write, and I thought the prompt was pretty cool. So in the book the kid has to get a complete makeover so that he looks nothing like his real self not even his eye color. So the question in the prompt was, how would you feel if you had to complete makeover yourself? So, if you are reading this,  write you answer in a paragraph saying why it would be easy or hard to get a complete makeover. Sounds easy write? Wrong. The catch is, (as inserted by our language arts teacher Mr.A ), in the topic sentance there has to be a similie or a metaphor. For example, my topic sentance was, For me getting a complete makeover would be like erasing who I really am... Can you finish that paragraph? Try it out! Post it on your blog or comment!!!

Movie Review: Apocolypto

 Apocolyto, directed by Mel Gibson, is about how the Mayan culture disapeared. When the movie starts you see a Mayan tribe hunting a wild boar in the rainforest. The hunt is laid out like a trap leading the boar to the spears. While they are carving up the wild boar, they hear noises behind them in the forest. Expecting the worse, the cheif's son, Jaguar Paw, starts shouting only to discover that it is a passing tribe. When asked why they are passing through, their cheif replies that they were evaded from their village, but they refuse to tell Jaguar Paw why they were evaded from their village. Heavy with fear, Jaguar Paw and the hunters return to their wives and children. Later that night, the whole village attends a story telling by their elder. Jaguar Paw goes to bed that night heavy with thought. The next morning, he and his pregnant wife are awoken by a barking dog, but he senses more. Suddenly, flashes of fire are flashing in the forest. Quickly, Jaguar Paw grabs his wife and child and runs them to a nearby pit. As he is loweing his family down into the hole, one of the mysterious attackers sees him. He tries to lower his family into the pit as fast as he can, but before he can finish he is attacked! Dropping his family a couple feet into the hole. The attackers then proceed to ransack the village, killing multiple people, men, women, even children, but taking a few men for victims. They proceed to walk the prisoners out of the village and into the unknown.

I thought the main themes in the movie where love and bravery. When Jaguar Paw is taken prisoner, his wife and child have to know that he loves them enough to fight for them and come back for them. It will take a heaping amout of bravery for Jaguar Paw to escape his captors and come back for his wife. The themes were very evident in the movie.

I think that people who are interested in history would enjoy this movie. It has a lot to do about how the Mayan culture disapeared. I wouldn't reccomend this movie to anyone who gets nauseous or queesy very easily for this movie is incredibly gory. This movie was very enjoyable and interesting to watch. I enjoyed very much and I hope you do too.

Science Systems Essay: Letter to the Human Body Corporation

       Dear Human Body Corporation:

I hear that you have decided to fire me, the nervous system, absurd! Without me, you're nothing! With my nuerons gone, good luck using your senses. You think P.E. is hard now? Without me, you'll be out of breath even before you hit the track. Without my brain, your heart won't only skip a beat, it won't beat at all! None of you blood will circulate! You need the nervous system more than any of the others!

Without my brain, none of your senses will work! If you're riding your bike in the road and a car comes, you'd hear it and get out of the way. Without me, that car would hit you because your hearing is history. My brain helps you see things around you. Without it, you're going to walk right onto a train track without even knowing it. Think how much that would hurt. Without me you won't be able to think about it! Also, firing me would also mean losing your taste. Imagine what would happen if you ate something you were deadly allergic to! Eliminating me is about as wise as eliminating your senses, don't do it.

Not only does my brain control your senses, but it controls your respiratory system too! Without that, you're dead. No nuerons will tell your lungs to move in and out. Oxyegen won't get in and carbon dioxide won't get out. You'll die from carbon dixode poising! You need me to breath and it's not debatable.

When your body get's hungry, the cells eat oxyegen and glucose. No brain, no heart pumping and no blood carrying sugar and oxyegen to feed your cells. Without my brain, your heart will just stop pumping all that nutricious blood. Then your cells die and so does your body. No nervous system, no body, pretty self explanatory, don't you think?

In all, without me, you're nothing! No senses, no awareness of your enviromnet. Trust me, that's not a good thing. I can just see the tearing goodbyes of your days of breathing after firing me. I know you hate blood tests, well without me, you won't have to take any ever again! Woopdedo!! Still, it's pretty bad not to have blood. My final point, you need me. Fire me, you lose it ALL!!

Book Review: Uninvited

Uninvited, by Amanda Marrone, is about a girl named Jordan and her fight for life against Michael, her phsychotic vampire ex-boyfriend! After Jordan broke up with Michael, he hooked up with the whole cheerleading team, and then rumor has it he killed himself. Only Jordan knows the truth, that Michael wasn't suicidal, but that he was attacked at the site of his "suicide" by a vampire. Now he sits outside Jordan's window every night, begging her to invite him in, so they can  be together... Forever.


The main themes in the book are trust, friendship, judgement and teamwork. Jordan has to trust her friends that when they learn her chilling secret, they won't go spreading rumors around school saying that she belongs in the nuthouse. That also intertwines with the friendship portion. Jordan has to rely on her former best friend Lisa, in order to save them both from being Michael's first victims. Jordan will also have to use her judgement multple times when she just wants to give in to Michael's mind tricks and let him in. Yet, using her judgement, she is saved time after time. Finally, teamwork may have to be used to destroy Michael once and for all (I say "may" so I don't give anything away!). By using trust, friendship, judgement and teamwork, Jordan and her friends might just kill Michael properly this time.


I would reccomend this book to any teen that is really into fantasy/romace because this book definitely has both. Yet, I would only reccomend this book to older kids, definitely not for kids under 12 or 13 for multiple reasons. Still, Uninvited is a great coming of age book and was really enjoyable. I know that I enjoyed it, I hope you will too.

Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Norman Jewison, is about the story of a little town in rural Russia. This little town is quite oblivious to all changes in the changing world, they follow their very strict Jewish tradition. The story is begins with the matchmaker of the town visiting the milkmans oldest daughter, Tzetil. The matchmaker's job is to take the men and their money to find a bride, or in modern wording, the men pay money to hook up with a chick. (Ususally younger by decades.) Back to the matchmakers visit. She tells Tzetil mother that the middle aged local butcher Leizer, would like her ninteeen year old daughters hand in marrige. Of course the mother is thrilled! Her oldest is finally going to be a bride! Yet, when Tzetil hears the news, she's horrified. She dosn't want to marry Leizer. She wants to marry the local tailor Mortal. Yet, she knows her father will never aprove. When her father goes to see the butcher, he has no idea that Leizer is going to ask for Tzetil's hand. When Leizer asks for her hand, the father says yes. What will Tzetil do for her love to Mortal? Fight for it. After the whole thing is solved, (did you think I was going to tell you who gets the girl?), and the wedding is over, the reception begins. Traditional Jewish religion says that at weddings, the men and women dance on either sides of a rope, but when a stranger intruppts that, the best  rebellion in history begins. Men dancing with women, women choosing their husbands. Then, their's the bad rebellion, the all mighty ruler of Russia desides that Jewish religion should be illegal and that all the Jews should be prosecuted and forced out of their homes. What will happen to the happy little town in rural Russia?

The main themes in this movie are definatley love, choice and forgiveness. The love portion is quite obvious. The milkman actually has five daughters, three being over 16, and all three fall in love with someone their not. So it's a Romeo and Juliet love. The choice portion is a little less obvious than the love portion but you can definatley see it. The father has to make a choice whether or not to allow the second oldest daughter to marry a man who did not ask permission. So he needs to say "On the other hand" about 16 times through the two and a half hour  movie. So he has to choose between his daughters and tradition. Then, theirs forgivness. The mother has to forgive her husband for allowing the second oldest daughter to marry a man without the matchmakers concent. Also, the father will have to choose to forgive the third oldest daughter for going  off and marrying a non-Jew without his permission even after he told him she wanted to and the boy asked permission. Does he forgive her? You're going to have to find out!

I would recomend this movie to anyone who likes broadway ( Fiddler on the Roof was a broadway production). I would also recomend this movie to anyone who is curious about how life was in early times, especially early Russia and how tradition worked in small towns. This is an excellent film and was nominated for and won multiple awards. If you enjoyed Lady and the Tramp you will enjoy this old fashioned film.

Movie Review: Avatar

In the movie Avatar, directed by James Cameron, Jake Sulley is taking over his brother's position on a scientific facility on a planet named Pandora. The idea of the program is to get a mineral depost that is worth millions of dollars, but the problem is there is a native group on top of the largest deposit on the planet. So they specially make clones that look exactly like the natives. After these clones are made, Jake and his team are put into a machine that transfers his brain waves into the avatars. Now, Jake is origanally in a wheelchair with his legs completely parlyzed. Yet, when his brain waves are transfered into his avatar form, he can walk. he can do everything he couldn't in his human form. Yet, there's a catch. He has to go into the woods and search for the deposits with his team. Easy right? Wrong. When he's chasen into the Pandorean wilderness by a native animal. He and his team, are sure he's going to die. Animals are stalking him through the woods, ready to attack. When they finally do attack, he is saved...by a native. The native knows right away this is not one of her kind, so she shuns him, but, when a sign show him being some sort a savior... She takes him, to The People.

The definite theme in this movie is who and what your fighting for. When Jake starts spending more time in his avatar then in his human form, he knows that he is with the natives more than he is with his own race. Also, when the base which is in charge of the mineral operation wants him to blow up the natives home, he know that his heart mind and everyting else belongs with these people more than his own.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone who likes sci-fi and action. This movie has both. I would only allow kids over the age of ten to go though, because there's ... "referances"and some curses (language). This movie was really really enjoyable. I loved it, i hope you do too.
